Back in Black

Bold lips make a big comeback

It used to be that black lipstick was strictly reserved for the utterly daring and outrageously cool. And while we used to lay awake at night contemplating which category we fell into (neither, sob), we can now rest assured that our name doesn’t need to start with Rih and end with anna to pull off this ridiculously pretty pout.
OK, I know what you’re thinking: Black lipstick? What am I, a tortured teen? But let’s be clear: This new breed of lipstick is definitely much more glam than goth…think more Miranda Kerr and less Ke$ha.
Sure, it may look a bit like black sidewalk chalk while sadly sitting in its tube, but don’t let the packaging fool you! Maybe it’s the hint of sparkle or maybe it’s the unexpected glamour, but these new shades of lipstick hardly look horrifying once on your lips. From surprisingly sheer to gorgeous gray, I've rounded up the coolest colors for your kisser.
Estee Lauder Limited Edition Pure Color Vivid Shine Lipstick Luminizer in Gunmetal $25: Tone down bright colors or add drama to dull hues with just one swipe of this absolutely genius lipstick luminizer. So go ahead, bust out that hideous makeup set your grandmother gave you last year — lackluster lips don’t stand a chance.

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Black $19: Do you dare to wear this ballsy black? I say go for it — and be sure to give me a call the next time you decide to hit the town. I could always use a super fun friend.

Rimmel London Glossy Long Lasting Lipgloss in Black Diva $4.99: It’s not just a clever name. Long-lasting and super shiny, this soft gray gloss definitely lives up to its moniker.

Bobbi Brown Caviar & Oyster Collection Lip Gloss in Black Pearl $23: Think mauve but modern with this surefire makeup bag staple. The color is so flattering, it looks stunning either by itself or layered on top of your fave lipstick.

MAC Lipstick in Grey Friday $15: Every winter we always get the sudden urge to embrace the season and go a tad dark with our makeup routine. A little bit goth, a little bit glam, MAC’s Grey Friday lipstick is the perfect way to perk up your winter pout.

Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in Homegirl $19: Just like Kat herself, this baby is daringly dark — perfect for those nights when you feel like unleashing your inner bad girl.
