The Two Best Time to Eat Carbs

Reader Question: Beautyqueen, if my goal is fatloss, when should I be eating carbs?  Or should I be avoiding carbs altogether? Thank you!

-Mary S., New York

Beautyqueen's Response:
Hi Mary!  Thanks for your question.  Carb consumption is a topic that many folks are indeed confused about, so I'm happy to clear up the "if" and "when" surrounding your carb intake.

First, NO, you definitely shouldn't be avoiding carbs altogether as there simply ;isn't any good reason to do so.  With the right approach, you can enjoy carbs and still drop flab; in fact, eating carbs can even speed your fatloss along when done strategically, which leads us right in to the second part of your question -- WHEN should you eat carbs?

Well, there are actually TWO times of day in which carbs are an ideal choice.  The first time is in the morning hours.  After an overnight fast your internal carbohydrate stores (known as glycogen) will be somewhat depleted, so carbs eaten in the morning are less likely to spill over into fat storage.  Not only that, but research shows that carbohydrate tolerance and insulin sensitivity are highest in the morning and only get worse as the day progresses.  So, if you want a flat belly, eat carbs in the morning and avoid carbs in the evening, especially in the late evening hours.

The second "best" time to eat carbs is after a workout. The only time that insulin sensitivity and carb tolerance is higher than in the morning is immediately following a workout.  So, choosing carbs after an intense exercise session is a great way to refuel your energy stores while avoiding fat storage.

Now, if you're looking to get even more of an edge on your carb intake, we've got something even better for you today.  You see, at the link below we're going to show you our #1 carb-fighting trick that you can use each and every time you eat carbs.  This simple carb-fighting "ritual" is clinically proven to:

*Lower your blood sugar
*Increase insulin sensitivity
*Decrease fat storage
*Increase fat burning

Even better, you can perform it in just a few seconds...and it WORKS like gangbusters!!

10 Tips For Getting Longer, Thicker, Sexier Hair

One day my client told me she saw a bob hairstyle in a magazine and decided to go for it! So, she got rid of her long and shiny locks and was happy with her new, easily manageable and cute bob hairstyle. But, as the time went by, she started to miss her long hair. She asked me for help.
So, I started to look for answers to the question that many ladies ask me: “How to make your hair grow faster?”
If you are in similar situation, or you just wonder what makes hair grow faster, let me share with you some tips:

1) Here is extremely great and efficient hair mask, which will not only help your hair to grow faster, but also will make your locks look more shiny, healthy and beautiful.

Mix in a small bowl: 1 egg yolk, 1 table spoon of honey, 1 table spoon of extra virgin olive oil (or linen oil) and 1 table spoon of vodka (or cognac).

Massage this mixture into the roots of your hair and then, spread to the lengths; wait for about 40 minutes. (For better results you can put a shower cup on your head and cover it up with a towel, but make sure that your special someone doesn’t see you wearing this extravagant “construction” on your head, it might not look that seductive) After the 40 minutes, wash and condition your hair, as usual. You will be astonished with amazing results!

2) Want to know how to make your hair grow faster? – Eat protein! Not only our exterior efforts, massages and sophisticated masks are important, but also, if you really want to have thick and beautiful hair, watch what you eat!
Did you know that food can make a tremendous difference in how fast your hair grows? Protein provides a building material for your locks to grow quicker, look healthier and be stronger, so include in eggs, nuts, fish, chicken, red meat, etc…include these into your balanced diet. Eat healthy. Your hair will say: “Thank you!”.

3) Brush your hair every day for 1 or 2 minutes, do it every morning and every evening to stimulate circulation in your scalp. Make sure to massage your head gently, it’s not working by a principle “the harder you push the faster it grows!”. Remember, never brush your hair when it’s wet, because it can damage your locks and cause breakage. We don’t want it, because we love our hair, right? :)

4) Massage your scalp every time you shampoo your hair. Do it gently, use your fingers, massage your head for about a minute or two, push and move the skin around your head, it will stimulate the blood flow and help your hair grow faster.

5) Here is another simple hair mask that will help your hair grow faster: for this treatment you’ll need some potato juice! Yes, i know, it might sound strange, but it works! Isn’t it the most important?! At least, potato juice smells better than an onion juice, right? (Onion juice can be really great in helping boost your hair shine, as well as hair growth, but it smells horrible, and that smell won’t go anywhere for weeks! This is the main reason why, I don’t recommend you using onion juice for hair growth, nor for any other hair treatment!). So, how to make our potato hair mask? Juice 2 big potatoes, add 1 table spoon of honey and 1 egg yolk.

Apply this mixture on your hair (mainly on the roots), wait for half an hour and wash your locks, as you usually do. This hair mask is amazing and it’s all natural!

6) Healthy and beautiful hair starts with a healthy scalp…It’s logical, right? This is why it’s important to take a great care of your scalp! Here is one easy tip: never apply a hair conditioner on the roots of your hair! Not only it will cause the loss of volume and your locks might get oily very quickly, but also, some hair conditioners contain waxes and silicons, and if you apply them on your scalp, it can prevent the skin on your head from breathing and clog pores. Conclusion: apply your hair conditioner only on the length of your hair.

7) If you want more tips on how to make your hair grow faster, try warm oil scalp massage. It’s a very easy trick, but it works wonders! Just heat up a little bit of oil (my preferred oils are: linen oil, olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil and jojoba oil); never boil the oil, slightly warm it up, so that it’s pleasantly warm and comfortable to touch, then, massage your scalp with this treatment. If you have a friend or, better, a lover, this can become even more pleasant! Ask them to massage your head, gently going through the roots of your hair in circular motions.
This scalp massage can last for about 20 minutes, then spread the oil on the length of your hair, wait for about half an hour and wash your locks thoroughly. Not only this experience is very relaxing, but also, you will love the result. This treatment works wonders for the hair growth and makes your tresses look very shiny and healthy.

8) Care for your hair while you sleep.Probably, you are wondering – how in the world is it possible to care for my hair while I sleep? Yes, it’s, actually, easy as pie. First of all, never sleep with a tight ponytail or a tight braid, it definitely won’t help your hair grow faster and can even cause breakage of your hair and pains in your scalp. Make a loose ponytail instead. And second tip for a night hair care is – try to sleep on a silk pillow case, it won’t cause friction and it’s much kinder to your hair, than cotton pillow covers. And, by the way, silk pillow is not only beneficial for your hair, but also for your facial skin. What a wonder is this silk! Healthy and shiny hair plus wrinkle free skin! Just perfect!

9) Want to know how to make your hair grow faster? Try castor oil hair treatment. It’s all simple: just massage your scalp with castor oil and leave it overnight; then, the next morning, wash and condition your hair as usual. Do this treatment once or twice a week for couple of weeks and you will be astonished by the amazing result! It works wonders for hair growth! Also, castor oil can help you to grow longer lashes and thicker eyebrows!

10) Vinegar rinse. Not only vinegar can help boost your hair growth, but also it can tremendously change the appearance of your locks – of course, for better – hair becomes shinier, stronger and healthier! Add 2 table spoons of vinegar into 1 litter of water and rinse your hair with this “self made healthy conditioner”, do it as the final step of your shampooing/conditioning process. If you aren’t a fan of vinegar odor – add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil into your vinegar rinse (or you can mix lemon juice with water instead of vinegar in the same proportion). Great and simple, all natural, but most important – it works!

5 ways to avoid harmful processed foods (without going nuts)

Have you a little freaked out that all of the processed foods you’re eating might be less than wonderful for your health? Do you feel overwhelmed about what on earth to eat instead, so you don’t do anything about it?

Sometimes the hardest thing about making a change is simply deciding where to start and realizing that you don’t have to know everything before you take your first step.

Sure, you could flip your entire diet upside-down all at once and embrace the cold turkey strategy for ditching processed foods. But I’m guessing you don’t find that idea very appealing, so I’m giving you five simpler strategies that will help you start ditching processed foods without losing your sanity.

What are “Real Foods”?

No matter what strategy you choose, you’ll need a way to figure out which foods are “real” and which foods are too processed to keep in your diet. Follow this simple rule: Read the ingredients label on everything you purchase. If you can easily identify every ingredient as having come from a plant or animal in nature, then it’s a keeper. If not, leave it on the shelf.

Sure, you can research even deeper with food additives information and animal welfare issues (which won’t necessarily be represented on food labels), but we’re just taking our first step, remember? So let’s just start with this one simple rule.

Pick Your Strategy

1. One Enemy at a Time

One popular way to start ditching processed foods is to target one food additive or chemical ingredient to avoid. You choose one additive (e.g., MSG, high fructose corn syrup, food coloring, natural flavor), and you stop purchasing anything that contains that ingredient. Once you’ve mastered that ingredient, you move on to another one. You don’t have to know everything about every food additive that exists; you just find one you feel may be harming your family’s health and then refuse to purchase it any more.

2. Weekly Recipe Make-Over

One of the most overwhelming things about ditching processed food is that you likely don’t know how to cook anything. Well, there’s only one way that is going to change—start practicing.

Should You Go Gluten-Free? The real deal on the popular diet trend

gluten_610

From those stirrup pants you rocked in middle school to swearing off carbs in college, we’ve all had our fair share of fads that maybe didn’t work out so well. But since the gluten-free craze hit the news, it seems like it’s here to stay. Here are the goods on gluten so you can decide for yourself if the gluten-free diet is the new LBD or just another trend.

First things first, gluten is a naturally occurring protein in grains like wheat, barley, and rye. But it’s also added to a lot of goodies, like salad dressings, soy sauce, and fried foods.

Gluten first got a bad rep because it has been associated with causing inflammation, stomach pain, gastrointestinal distress, and even osteoporosis in some people. People suffering these gluten-related ailments often have a condition known as celiac disease. And gluten is definitely a no-no if you fall into this category.

But then there’s another group of people who may not have celiac disease, but do seem to feel better and lose weight when they eat a gluten-free diet. A lot of this, however, has to do with the fact that when you eat gluten-free, you typically are eating fresh, unprocessed foods, which is a good practice in general.

If you eat a gluten-free diet that’s healthy and you feel better, more power to you. However, if you eat a diet that’s hell-bent on avoiding gluten but still includes things like gluten-free cookies and baked goods, you’ll be swapping one “bad” thing for another; companies often add fats and sugars as a replacement for gluten in goodies.

The moral of the story is that if you avoid gluten, eat healthy, and therefore feel better, then give gluten the boot. However, if you find yourself switching to gluten-free foods and not feeling better, you may want to add gluten back in because you could be missing out on important nutrients, such as B vitamins, iron, and fiber.

Try These Winter Workouts!

Mix it up with these cold weather routines

What better time is there to discover a spankin’ new, uh-mazing workout than right now? (Hint: there is no better time!) I've rounded up some great ways to get you moving this winter. Whether you’re a natural snow angel or prefer to escape the winter chills, you’re sure to find a workout to warm both your muscles and your heart.

For the Great Outdoorswoman:

Go tobogganing. What exactly is a toboggan, you ask? Simply, it’s a sled without runners. Sure, tobogganing may not seem like much of a workout, but take a few trips back up that hill, and you’ll understand just how good this activity is for you — especially when it comes to perking up that booty! Plus, you’ll be having too much fun to even notice that you’re in the middle of a winter sweat sesh!

Slip on a pair of snowshoes. There are endless health and fitness benefits to taking a stroll outdoors, not the least of which include weight loss, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. But throw on a pair of snowshoes, and you’ve got a whole new level of outdoor fitness since snowshoeing can burn anywhere between 400 and 1,000 calories an hour! Now that’s a great reason to bundle up and enjoy the scenery.

For the Warm Weather Wisher:

Take yoga practice off your mat. Love yoga but feel like taking your practice to the next level? Enter aerial yoga, a workout that uses a silk hammock to suspend yogis above the ground — a fun, new twist on an ancient practice. Plus, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow swear by it, and have you seen their physiques? Check out AntiGravity Fitness for more info.

Hit it, then quit it. 2014 is the year of the High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout. Lasting anywhere between four and 30 minutes, a HIIT workout consists of brief periods of intense movement followed by brief recovery periods. There are a number of variations to try, from Tabata to Focus T25, the 25-minute workout from Insanity creator Shaun T. The fact that we can get a complete (and we mean complete) workout in less than half an hour makes this one regimen we can definitely fit into our hectic schedules!

The Skinny on Smart Snacking

Maybe it was the hours of browsing holiday food porn on Pinterest that made your tummy growl. Or it could have been the carb-alicious leftovers staring at you every time you opened the fridge!

Whatever the case, when hunger calls, it calls, but instead of reaching for those Cheetos, there’s a smarter way to satiate your hunger pains. Be sure to pay attention to hunger levels and start eating when you feel hungry as opposed to when you're starving. And stop when you feel satisfied, not when you’re stuffed.

So, how can you feel full without eating a supersized meal? Here are some slim snack meanies under 100 calories that we recommend.

When you’re in the mood for something quick:

  • Vegetables with 2-3 tablespoons of hummus or black bean dip
  • One hard-boiled egg
  • Non-fat Greek yogurt (6 ounces)

When you’re craving something sweet:

  • 1 Vans Light Waffle with 3 sliced strawberries and 2 tablespoons light whip cream
  • 1 graham cracker topped with 1/4 cup cottage cheese

When you want a light meal:

  • Soy burger patty or soy hot dog wrapped in lettuce
  • 1/2 sandwich with 1 slice of light whole wheat bread, 1 1/2 ounces turkey, lettuce, tomato, and mustard

Cannabis The Next Big Thing in Beauty?

Long gone are the days of Reefer Madness and the concurrent idea that marijuana alone will somehow turn you into a monster or a murderer. First-world society has slowly warmed to the once-vilified drug, first with medical usage, then decriminalization... and now, it's entirely legal for recreational use in Colorado. Progress!

While updates on America's attitude toward marijuana are regularly broadcasted on the news, one less publicized use for the plant is as an ingredient in skincare. Hemp has never been forbidden from use in cosmetics -- in fact, the fatty acid-rich oil is a highly effective emollient that goes great in shampoos and conditioners.

Wait, Pot Can Reduce Skin Cancer Risk?

Publicly-quoted company Medical Marijuana Inc. is taking cosmetic cannabis to the next level with their new anti-aging skincare line, Cannabis Beauty Defined. The brand will use super-concentrated, cannabidiol-rich hemp oil as the star ingredient in its exfoliant, cleanser, eye cream, gel masque, moisturizer, and serum. And as it happens, the use of hemp oil isn't just a stoner gimmick -- clinical research shows that cannabinoids have antioxidant properties and can also help to regulate conditions like dry, irritable skin or acne.

Whether you smoke the stuff or you're firmly against it, there's no stigma attached to using it on your skin. We're just a little curious about the fragrance of the product: the last thing we need is to go around with our faces smelling like a Phish concert.

Get rid of cellulite

I haven't gotten a chance to try this out yet....but I want to asap. Ya'll let me know how it works for you. Good luck!!

Dr Oz’s Cellulite Coffee Sugar Scrub Ingredients:

- 1/2 cup coffee grounds
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- olive oil

How to Make Dr Oz’s Coffee Sugar Scrub Cellulite Home Remedy

Instructions:

Doctor Oz said that Jodi’s Cellulite Home Remedy works because caffeine enhances fat metabolism and so when it is topically applied, coffee absorbs and removes liquid and fat from your skin, which can decrease the appearance of cellulite. Dr Oz said this Cellulite Home Remedy can temporarily make your cellulite disappear, but it is not a long term solution. You should think about doing this Cellulite Home Remedy a couple of times a week.

1. Apply olive oil to your areas with cellulite (back of your thighs and upper arms for example).
2. Combine the coffee grounds and brown sugar.
3. Use the coffee scrub on your cellulite areas by moving in circular motions.
4. Rinse off. Of course, the easiest way to do this Cellulite Home Remedy is to do it in the shower!

3 Easy-to-Make Homemade Deep Conditioners

For some of us, going natural did not stop with our hair.  It continued with a move towards mixing our own “natural” products.  While numerous recipes exist on the internet, few are actually both simple AND effective in meeting the needs of our natural hair.  If you are new to making your own products or are a current mixtress searching for an easy-to-make recipe that actually works, you can start with these homemade conditioners, which are my three favorites:

1. For Manageability – Bananas, olive oil, glycerin, and honey
This homemade conditioner improves the manageability of my hair for post-rinse styling. The secret is in the banana, which has a way of minimizing shrinkage and softening the hair when mixed with the other ingredients.  Meanwhile, glycerin and honey, which are both humectants, and olive oil, which is known to penetrate the hair, all contribute moisturizing benefits.  Do not be alarmed if you notice a loosening of your coils or curls with this conditioner; the effect is temporary until your next wash day. This recipe is ideal for naturals who want to achieve easier blow-outs or better stretched styles.

Ingredients:
1 large overripe banana (sliced) OR 7 oz banana baby food
4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp pure vegetable glycerin
2 tbsp pure honey
Instructions:
Place the sliced banana, extra virgin olive oil, glycerin, and honey all in a blender. Blend the ingredients thoroughly making sure no lumps or banana bits remain. (Depending on your blender quality, you may or may not have to then sieve the mixture.  Another option is to use banana baby food, though the conditioner may not be as effective.) Apply to hair and let sit for 30-45 minutes under a shower cap. Detangle, rinse thoroughly, and style as usual.
2. For Detangling – Avocados, olive oil, shea butter, and apple cider vinegar
This homemade conditioner is lubricating, thick, and heavy, all of which give my kinks slip, moisture, and hang for detangling. The avocado’s meatiness and fatty acid content contribute to the effectiveness of this mixture.  Additionally, the fatty acids in the olive oil combined with the emollient properties of shea butter add even more lubrication and moisturizing benefits.  Lastly, the acidic pH of the apple cider vinegarhelps to flatten the cuticles for easier detangling.  This conditioner is ideal for those with thick, dense hair and major shrinkage.

Ingredients:
1 overripe avocado (sliced)
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup unrefined shea butter
2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
Instructions:
Place the sliced avocado, unrefined shea butter, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), andapple cider vinegar (ACV) into a blender. (There is no need to melt the shea butterahead of time.)  Blend all the ingredients thoroughly and add more EVOO, if necessary, until the mixture reaches your desired consistency. When done, apply to the hair and let sit for 30-45 minutes under a shower cap. Detangle, rinse thoroughly, and style as usual.
3. For Strengthening – Coconut oil and honey
This conditioner is ideal for naturals whose hair dislikes protein conditioners but needs a bit of strengthening.  The key is the coconut oil, which binds to the hair thus reducing keratin loss. Honey, a humectant, is also added to the mix to impart moisture retention.  I get the best of both worlds – moisture and strength – with this conditioner.  You could also use two servings of the recipe if your hair is really thick, dense, and naturally dry.

Ingredients:
4 tbs of extra virgin coconut oil
2 tbs of pure honey
(depending on hair density or length, you may use two servings of this recipe)
Instructions:
Place the coconut oil and honey in a small cup and place the cup in a large bowl of hot water.  Allow the cup to sit in the water for a few minutes until the mixture is warm.  Pour the mixture onto freshly washed but towel blotted hair.  Put on a shower cap, and wrap with a towel to prevent mixture from dripping onto face. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse out 80-90% of the conditioner, and style as usual.
